question on fractional GAE
I have an opportunity to buy a 2006 1/10oz GAE "first strike" from my local dealer for $92.00. It comes in the mint packaging, the blue velvet case and the rest of the deal.
Do you guys think this a good deal? I'm not looking to sell this on eBay or anything and the moment, and I'm looking more at silver than gold but I easily see gold hitting $920/oz soon so i would make my premium up, but what kind of premium does this coin carry if any because it is a "first strike"? Your opinions please ... :36_3_12: |

Re: question on fractional GAE
Yup. $10 over spot for a 1/10 oz coin is a good deal.
"first strike" is marketing BS |
Re: question on fractional GAE
"First strike" doesn't mean squat. The pretty box might impress someone who's ignorant and get you a few extra bucks at trade-out.
The premium of all fractional AGE's IMO is going to go up substantially until the mint starts producing them again. $92.00 right now is a good price. Grab it so you're above all else, you hold it. |
Re: question on fractional GAE
The mark up on fractionals is usually higher than for 1 oz coins, ime. At 92 it's a buy, don't think about it for too long.

Re: question on fractional GAE
Buy it. Fractionals are scarce right now in north central Wa.

Re: question on fractional GAE
I'll second the motion, buy it before he wakes up and charges you $125. I'm not sure how he claims it's first strike if it's still in the mint packaging. Usually you have to pay off a grading company to get in on that scam.

Re: question on fractional GAE
Thanks to everyone who gave me their input. I went back today and the price went up...they were not $97 so the price went up $5 when spot had moved up $13.40. With no complaints I bought 5. Also picked up a 1/10oz Platinum eagle (my first platinum) for $107, which I thought was a good deal and 2 ASE's.
Thanks again: http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...o/DSCN0225.jpg :5_1_120::5_1_120::5_1_120: |

Re: question on fractional GAE
Man, that's a great haul. And you didn't even have to call a shady magazine huckster in Beaumont like the rest of.

Re: question on fractional GAE
I just logged in my 1/10oz GAE's and noticed they are all 2007's. According to mintage figures from 1986-2007 it is the 3rd lowest mintage at 190,010. Second behind 1991's 165,200 and 1988's 159,500.
Does this mean anything as far as additional value or is it only the lowest mintage that makes an item more expensive such as the '96 ASE? |
Re: question on fractional GAE
This one time, in GIM bandcamp, I made a nice find at the local dealer and went literally 1/10 of a mile to my bank branch to make a withdrawal. On my return my dealer was wiped out; I'd been gone all of 5 minutes. I learned that you do not go to the dealer without the cash you intend to spend when you arrive. OP made an awesome score.

Re: question on fractional GAE
I feel like I'm getting really lucky here. I just went back to my new favorite coin shop and picked up 2 more 1/10oz GAE's at $96 each AND 2 1/20oz Gold pandas for $50 a pop. At a premium slightly higher than the 1/10's I took it and left him with 4 more that I may go back for. One of the pandas is a '86 and one is a '85.
